Urinalysis
Urinalysis is the laboratory analysis of a urine sample. In chronic-kidney-disease, it provides critical information including urine specific gravity (how concentrated the urine is), presence of protein, and signs of infection.
Key Facts
- Urine specific gravity is a key CKD indicator: dilute (<1.020) suggests failing kidneys
- Concentrated urine (>1.030-1.040) indicates normal kidney concentrating ability
- Water has a specific gravity of 1.000
- urine-protein-creatinine-ratio is performed on the urine sample for CKD sub-staging
- Urinalysis may miss kidney infection (pyelonephritis) in CKD patients because extreme dilution masks infection markers
- Urine culture is recommended to rule out infection
- Species: dogs and cats
