Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease
FLUTD is a group of conditions affecting the bladder and urethra of cats. It produces the same symptoms regardless of the underlying cause: bloody urine, straining, urinating in unusual places, and licking the urinary opening.

- In young cats (<10 yrs): 50% idiopathic cystitis, 20% bladder-stones, 20% urethral blockage, 1-5% true infection
- In older cats (>10 yrs): 50% true urinary-tract-infection, 10% stones, 17% infection+stones, 66% have some kidney insufficiency
- Average age for first symptoms: 4 years
- Male cats at risk for life-threatening urinary-obstruction due to narrow urethra
- Risk factors: male sex, overweight, dry food only diet, low water intake, stress, insufficient litter boxes
- A blocked cat can die within 24-48 hours; this is always an emergency
- Formerly called FUS (Feline Urologic Syndrome)
