Dyspnea
Dyspnea is labored or difficult breathing and is always a medical emergency in pets. Recognized by increased effort, noisy or squeaky breathing, and cyanosis (bluish mucous membranes).
Key Facts
- Open-mouth breathing (panting) in cats is a sign of severe respiratory distress
- Brachycephalic breeds are predisposed due to soft palate interference
- Causes include congestive heart failure, asthma, pneumonia, cancer, laryngeal paralysis, and fluid around the lungs
- Pets must be stabilized with oxygen before diagnostic testing
- Cooling overheated brachycephalic dogs is critical as panting becomes inefficient in heat
- Do not give anything by mouth to a pet with breathing difficulty
- Species: dogs and cats
