Electrocution

Electrocution occurs when a pet receives an electrical shock, most commonly from chewing on electrical cords. It can cause severe tissue burns, pulmonary edema (delayed up to 24 hours), abnormal heart rhythms, and death.

Key Facts

  • Never touch the pet until the electrical source is turned off or removed
  • Use a dry wooden broom or non-conductive object to move pet away from source
  • Puppies and kittens are most at risk from chewing on electrical cords
  • Pulmonary edema (fluid in lungs) can develop up to 24 hours after shock
  • Abnormal heart electrical activity may occur
  • Chest X-rays are commonly recommended to check for lung fluid
  • All electrocuted animals should be examined even if appearing normal
  • Species: dogs and cats
