Ureteral Stones

Ureteral stones occur when mineral deposits from the kidney break off and lodge in the ureter (the tube connecting kidney to bladder). This can partially or completely obstruct urine flow, causing acute kidney damage.

Key Facts

  • More common with age and calcium-phosphorus-balance problems
  • Complete obstruction can destroy a kidney
  • Partial obstruction causes intermittent creatinine spikes
  • A sudden spike in creatinine is a clue that a stone may have lodged
  • Quick intervention may save the kidney
  • Kidney imaging is recommended early in CKD and periodically after
  • Species: dogs and cats
