Fever

Fever is an elevated body temperature as an immune response to infection or inflammation. Normal body temperature for dogs and cats is 101-102.5F (38.3-39.2C).

  • Fever does NOT always indicate infection; autoimmune disease, heat stroke, and cancer can also cause it
  • Temperature above 103F warrants calling a veterinarian
  • Temperature above 106F is life-threatening and demands immediate attention
  • Take rectal temperature with a digital thermometer (ear thermometers are unreliable in pets)
  • Cool pet with cold water on ears and feet if temperature exceeds 105.5F; stop cooling at 103F
  • Never give aspirin, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen (Tylenol) to pets; these are toxic
  • Shivering, lethargy, depression, poor appetite are signs suggesting fever
  • Species: dogs and cats
