Cholangitis

Inflammation of the bile ducts and liver in cats, the second most common feline liver disease.

Key Facts

  • Three forms: neutrophilic (bacterial), lymphocytic (immune), destructive
  • Over 50% of affected cats also have pancreatitis and/or IBD (triaditis)
  • Feline anatomy: pancreatic and bile ducts share same intestinal opening
  • Signs: poor appetite, vomiting, jaundice, weight loss, fever
  • Diagnosis requires liver biopsy for definitive classification
  • Antibiotics needed for at least 1-2 months for bacterial form
  • Ursodiol (choleretic) often prescribed lifelong
