Tapeworm Proglottids

Visible, mobile tapeworm body segments passed in feces or found around the animal's perianal area.

Proglottids contain fully developed reproductive organs and tapeworm eggs.
Taenia segments are characteristically wider than they are long.
Dipylidium caninum segments are longer than they are wide and resemble rice grains.
Segments may dry out and appear as small, yellowish specks resembling sesame seeds.

Both parasites shed visible segments in feces or around the anal region.

Mature Taenia worms shed visible proglottids that are often the first clinical sign noticed by owners.

Direct observation of segments often compensates for the low sensitivity of fecal egg testing.
