Rectal Prolapse
Eversion of the rectum through the anus, most common in young animals under 4 months.
Key Facts
- Looks like red/pink tube protruding from anus
- Caused by prolonged straining from parasites, diarrhea, constipation, or obstruction
- Predisposed breeds: Manx cat, Boston terrier
- Treatment: clean, replace tissue, purse-string suture to prevent recurrence
- Severe cases may need surgical resection or colopexy
- Must treat underlying cause to prevent recurrence
