Entropion
Inward rolling of the eyelids causing eyelashes to rub against and damage the cornea.
Key Facts
- Often genetic — many predisposed dog breeds (Shar Pei, Bulldog, Chow Chow)
- Rare congenital in cats; secondary entropion from herpesvirus more common
- Signs: squinting, excessive tearing, light sensitivity, mucous discharge
- Treatment: blepharoplasty (surgical removal of excess eyelid skin)
- Puppies: temporary lid tacking until adult head conformation develops
- Corneal ulcers must be treated concurrently
- Affected dogs should not be bred
