Corneal Ulcer
Wound or erosion on the corneal surface causing pain, redness, and risk of infection.
Key Facts
- Fluorescein stain confirms ulcer — sticks to damaged area (bright green)
- Common causes: scratches, foreign bodies, chemical irritation, self-trauma
- Cat scratch wounds especially dangerous — seal infection inside eye
- Treatment: topical antibiotics 4x daily + atropine for pain (dilates pupil)
- Recheck in one week mandatory — most heal but some progress deeper
- Indolent ulcers (with lip edge): grid keratectomy or debridement needed
- Elizabethan collar prevents further self-trauma
