Paraphimosis
Paraphimosis is the inability to retract the penis into its sheath; phimosis is the inability to extend the penis. Both can be congenital or acquired and cause significant pain and complications.
Key Facts
- Paraphimosis: penis extended out of sheath for >2 hours (not an erection); medically urgent
- Untreated paraphimosis can lead to tissue death and may require amputation
- Common causes: hair matting around base, rolled sheath edges, trauma, infection, post-mating
- Predisposed breeds: Bouvier des Flandres, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Labrador
- Treatment: cleaning, lubrication, hair removal, swelling reduction, pain management
- Phimosis: rare; sheath opening too narrow for penis to exit; can block urination
- Phimosis treatment: surgical widening of the sheath opening
- Keep intact males' genital area clean and trimmed to prevent matting
- Species: dogs primarily, cats (long-haired breeds)
