Nosebleed
Epistaxis is bleeding from the nose. It can be a sign of various conditions from minor irritation to cancer and should not be underestimated.
Key Facts
- Note whether bleeding is from one nostril or both
- Apply ice pack (covered in cloth) on bridge and side of nose to constrict vessels
- Keep pet calm; excitement increases blood pressure and worsens bleeding
- Do not put anything up the nose; sneezing will dislodge clots
- Seek veterinary attention if profuse bleeding or lasting more than 5 minutes
- Causes: foreign bodies (foxtails), polyps, infections, poisoning, bleeding disorders, cancer
- Check gums for pallor (white gums = emergency)
- Species: dogs and cats
