Vaccine Reaction
Allergic reactions to vaccinations ranging from mild soreness to life-threatening anaphylaxis.
Key Facts
- Normal: mild fever, lethargy, pain at site, reduced appetite for 1-2 days
- Abnormal: vomiting, facial swelling, hives, collapse, breathing difficulty
- ~1 in 250 dogs has some reaction; highest risk: small-breed young adult neutered males
- More vaccines at once = higher risk (but multivalent vaccines do not increase risk)
- Premedication with antihistamines/steroids can prevent reactions
- Separate vaccines by 3-4 weeks if prior reaction
- Report reactions to manufacturer and FDA/EPA
