Serotonin syndrome is a potentially life-threatening condition caused by excess serotonin in the nervous system, usually from drug interactions or overdose.

  • Most commonly caused by interaction of serotonergic drugs (SSRIs, tramadol, trazodone, MAOIs)
  • Can occur from ingestion of owner's antidepressant medications
  • Signs: agitation, tremors, hyperthermia, rapid heart rate, dilated pupils, diarrhea, vocalization
  • Severe cases: seizures, muscle rigidity, death
  • Treatment: stop offending drug(s), cyproheptadine (serotonin antagonist), supportive care, cooling
