Nicotine Toxicity
Poisoning from electronic cigarettes and e-liquid nicotine in pets.
Key Facts
- Clinical signs at 0.5 mg/kg body weight; 20 mg can be lethal for cats/small dogs
- E-liquid refill bottles extremely dangerous (up to 1080 mg nicotine in 30 mL bottle)
- Signs begin within 15-30 minutes: drooling, vomiting, agitation, panting
- Severe: tremors, seizures, cardiac arrest, coma, death
- Nicotine absorbed through skin — paw contact with spilled e-juice is dangerous
- Standard decontamination (inducing vomiting) usually not helpful — too rapid absorption
