Iris Coloboma

Congenital thinning or hole in the iris causing light sensitivity, most common in Australian Shepherds.

Key Facts

  • Born with the condition — area of iris never formed properly
  • Does not affect vision and does not progress
  • Large holes cause squinting from excess light entering pupil
  • Genetic — affected animals should not be bred
  • No treatment available; dog goggles (Doggles) may help with squinting
  • May be associated with cataracts, lens colobomas, retinal colobomas
  • Screened during CAER (Companion Animal Eye Registry) exams
